Fiji’s Drug Crisis: A Call to Action from Top Officials

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad has characterized Fiji’s drug crisis as “scary” and has called for a united effort to address it.

His comments followed a briefing from eight District Advisory Councilors (DAC) regarding various issues within their communities during a discussion session over the weekend. Key topics included drainage issues, feeder road maintenance, blocked culverts, informal settlements, and the rising problem of illicit drugs, which dominated the agenda of the meeting held in Vuci South, Nausori.

During his remarks on the drug issue, Professor Prasad expressed concern over the involvement of children in drug-related activities, describing the situation as not only “scary” but also deeply troubling. He emphasized that tackling the drug crisis is not solely the responsibility of the government, but also falls to parents and community members.

Professor Prasad assured attendees that he would work to address the concerns raised in the meeting. He also took the opportunity to discuss elements of the 2024-25 National Budget, reiterating that the Coalition Government is dedicated to supporting the community and providing necessary assistance.

Further discussions with stakeholders and community members are expected to occur in the upcoming days.
