Fiji’s Dr. Robin Mitchell Takes Helm at IOC’s Health and Safety Commission

Fijian Dr. Robin Mitchell, who has represented Fiji in athletics and hockey and served as a national hockey coach, has been appointed as the Chair of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Health, Medicine and Science Commission. In this role, Dr. Mitchell will advocate for the IOC’s interests and those of the broader Olympic Movement, particularly in the field of sports sciences.

The IOC has highlighted the importance of his expertise within the Pacific Islands region, where one of the pilot Safe Sport Hubs is being established. These hubs are aimed at addressing interpersonal violence in sports by facilitating access to localized care, guidance, and support. Through collaboration with sports organizations, governments, and civil society, the initiative aspires to enhance safeguarding in sports, promoting lasting change at the community level.

Dr. Mitchell assumes his position on January 1, 2025, succeeding Prof. Uğur Erdener, who led the IOC Medical and Scientific Commission for nearly a decade. His leadership is expected to strengthen the IOC’s commitment to athlete welfare and health, which aligns with the ongoing efforts to ensure safe sport for all participants.

Dr. Mitchell’s appointment is timely, as concerns around athlete safety and well-being continue to gain attention globally. The establishment of the Safe Sport Regional Hubs, bolstered by his leadership, fosters hope for a future where sports environments are supportive and secure for all athletes, paving the way for a healthier and more inclusive sporting culture.

Overall, this positive development marks a significant step forward for athlete welfare in sports, reflecting a commitment to safeguarding the physical and mental health of athletes across the Olympic Movement.
