Recent findings from the Fiji Bureau of Statistics (FBoS) in the Multiple Indicator Cluster MICS Plus 2024-2025 survey reveal that a significant majority of Fijians have access to digital technology and essential utilities. The survey shows that 89% of the population has internet access, with urban areas at 92% and rural areas at 87%. This high level of connectivity suggests a clear opportunity for enhancing digital inclusion and economic participation throughout the country.

Moreover, the survey highlights that 98% of Fijians own a smartphone, an impressive statistic that includes 97% of those living in rural regions. The ownership of such devices is crucial as it lays the groundwork for improved access to digital services, including education and commerce. However, only 15% of the population possesses a laptop, and a mere 4% own a Smart TV.

In terms of basic utilities, the report indicates that 93% of Fijians have access to electricity—96% in urban areas compared to 90% in rural regions—showing a relatively small gap in utility access. Furthermore, 80% of households are connected to the national grid, while 10% rely on solar energy, predominantly in rural communities.

These findings echo earlier reports that stress the significance of digital connectivity as a means to bridge the gap in socio-economic disparities. Previous studies revealed that while wealth distribution remains uneven, with significant proportions of the populace classified as poor, the prevalence of mobile technology could serve as a catalyst for socioeconomic growth. The widespread ownership of smartphones among young Fijians positions them as key drivers in leveraging technology for sustainable development and addressing social challenges.

Overall, while there are still considerable hurdles related to wealth distribution and resource allocation, the high level of digital connectivity in Fiji presents a hopeful outlook for utilizing technology as a tool for broader economic inclusion and access to essential services. As Fiji moves forward, harnessing this potential can empower more citizens, particularly those in marginalized communities, contributing positively to the nation’s economic landscape.
