Lynda Tabuya, the Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, has emphasized the need for public vigilance regarding the effects of advancing technology and enhanced internet connectivity among Fijians. Her comments follow a recent partnership between Vodafone Fiji and Starlink, which is set to significantly improve telecommunications infrastructure, particularly for rural and maritime communities.

While acknowledging that this technological progression offers great potential for connectivity, Ms. Tabuya raised concerns about an expected increase in searches and data traffic related to pornographic sites in Fiji. Citing statistics, she noted that Fiji ranks fourth in Google trends concerning the word “porn,” with adult content being among the top ten types of data traffic in the country.

As a co-chair of the anti-pornography taskforce, Ms. Tabuya urged telecommunications companies and community stakeholders to engage in proactive measures, such as organizing awareness sessions. These initiatives should educate the public about responsible internet use, the adverse effects of excessive screen time, and the associated risks of pornography.

“It is vital that citizens are equipped with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly,” she stated. Ms. Tabuya also highlighted the potential for an increase in technology-facilitated gender-based violence and violence against children, stressing the need for safeguards to protect communities as digital infrastructure improves.

She called on citizens to work collectively to ensure that the advantages of better connectivity do not compromise social responsibilities or family well-being. Moreover, fostering a culture of awareness and responsibility can potentially leverage technology for the greater good.

Overall, this initiative represents a proactive approach to not only embrace technological advancement but also address its accompanying challenges. By prioritizing education and community engagement, Fiji can harness the positive aspects of connectivity while adequately managing its risks, fostering a safer digital environment for all.
