Google has successfully landed its Bulikula and Tabua undersea telecommunications cables at the Fiji International Telecommunications Ltd (FINTEL) facility in Vatuwaqa, Suva. This development marks a milestone for Fiji, greatly enhancing the nation’s regional and international connectivity and paving the way for substantial domestic economic growth.

Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, MSME, and Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, described this moment as pivotal for Fiji, emphasizing that the infrastructure will allow citizens to better connect with the global community and equip them with essential tools to thrive in the burgeoning digital economy.

FINTEL’s CEO, George Samisoni, highlighted the company’s role in managing the cable systems and expressed optimism about discussions regarding additional responsibilities at Google’s forthcoming landing station in Natadola. This project is part of Google’s larger Pacific Connect initiative, which includes the deployment of six new cables aimed at linking the Pacific islands to key locations including the United States, Australia, and Japan.

The Bulikula and Tabua cables form part of an extensive network designed to create connectivity rings across North, Central, and South Pacific regions. Besides enhancing resilience and redundancy for Fiji’s current international cable gateway, these new cables are expected to establish more direct connections with other Pacific island countries and territories.

Google Cloud’s Global Network Infrastructure Vice President, Brian Quigley, expressed excitement over the project, stating that the new systems would significantly bridge the digital divide and improve connectivity for Fiji and its neighbors.

In conclusion, this initiative not only fosters international partnerships but also supports local economic development by attracting investments, ultimately benefiting the Fijian population in the long run. The arrival of these cables is a promising step towards positioning Fiji as a premier connectivity hub in the Pacific, potentially leading to increased opportunities for innovation and growth in various sectors.
