Dereck Jang, a 19-year-old aspiring soldier from Fiji, made an emotional farewell as he paid respects to his grandparents at their grave on Reservoir Road in Suva before departing for England to join the British Army. His departure marks a significant chapter in his life, as he will be away from home for the next five years.

Reflecting on his journey, Jang expressed tears of both gratitude and sadness upon realizing the magnitude of this opportunity. The former student of Marist Brothers High School emphasized that he never imagined receiving such a chance, which he views as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that no one in their right mind would pass up.

Initially intending to pursue a career in civil law, Jang stated, “But the prospects of joining the British Army is one only a fool would refuse.” He encouraged other young individuals to seize similar promising opportunities, wishing success for his fellow applicants heading to England.

Jang has completed extensive training in Fiji, and he feels confident about the remaining physical training he will undertake in England, especially with aspirations to join the Parachute Regiment and connect with family members already serving there. His passion extends beyond military pursuits, as he enjoys dancing, gardening, rugby, and athletics.

His mother, Georgina Jang, shared her excitement about her son’s selection, humorously noting that his departure means “more food to eat now” as he is known for his substantial appetite. She hopes that all her sons eventually join the British Army, expressing bittersweet emotions as they prepare to say goodbye.

The group of applicants, which included Jang, was the first of several expected to leave for the UK, according to the British High Commission. They handled their visa and paperwork independently before boarding a midnight flight that included a stopover in Los Angeles before arriving at Heathrow Airport in London.

This journey offers a hopeful perspective, highlighting the pursuit of dreams and opportunities that young individuals are willing to chase, even when it means leaving home behind. As they embark on their military journey, they carry not only their aspirations but also the love and support of their families, encouraging them every step of the way.
