Dereck Jang, a 19-year-old from Fiji, bid farewell to his homeland last night, making a poignant visit to his grandparents’ grave on Reservoir Road in Suva. Emotions ran high as he realized he would be away for five years after being selected to join the British Army, a dream opportunity that he never anticipated.
With aspirations of pursuing a career in civil law, Jang expressed that the chance to serve in the British Army was too significant to decline. He encouraged other young people to seize such promising opportunities when they arise. “The prospects of joining the British Army is one only a fool would refuse,” he stated confidently.
Jang, the eldest of seven brothers, hopes that his siblings will also consider a military career in the future. He is particularly keen on joining the Parachute Regiment and feels well prepared for the challenges ahead, confident that his training on home soil has equipped him well for the physical demands that await him in England.
His mother, Georgina Jang, shared her pride and excitement over her son’s achievement, lightening the mood by joking about the family’s future meals, given Dereck’s hearty appetite. “I hope all my seven Spanish angels join the British Army one day,” she added, signaling her faith in her sons’ potential.
The group of new recruits, including Jang, departed from Nadi on a significant flight, stopping in Los Angeles before heading to Heathrow Airport where they were welcomed by British Army officials. This marks the beginning of a new chapter both for Jang and for the British Army, as they pave the way for a new generation of soldiers.
With each step taken, Jang embodies the spirit of opportunity and ambition, showcasing the power of pursuing one’s dreams, while also fostering hopes for his brothers and a bright future in the military.
This story not only emphasizes the importance of seizing opportunities but also highlights the support of family and community which can be instrumental in personal achievements.
