Fiji’s Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, has expressed his commitment to addressing key unresolved issues within the Police portfolio. As he awaits the completion of investigations linked to allegations regarding the improper issuance of passports to children of foreign nationals tied to the Grace Road human rights case, he has stepped aside from his duties related to Immigration and Police. In the interim, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has taken over these ministerial responsibilities.
Despite stepping back, Tikoduadua remains hopeful about the swift appointment of a new Commissioner of Police. He emphasized the urgency of filling this role, noting the significance of ongoing initiatives like the renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Fiji and Australia under the Vuvale Partnership, which aims to strengthen bilateral policing efforts.
Tikoduadua also revealed that a consultant mentoring the incoming Commissioner of Police is already in place, alongside four additional experts—three from Australia and one from New Zealand—ready to support the Fiji Police Force. These appointments are part of a broader strategy known as “Restore Blue,” which aims to elevate policing standards in Fiji with guidance from regional partners.
Confirming the importance of these developments, Tikoduadua stated that the success of the refreshed policing framework depends heavily on the appointment of the Commissioner and the finalization of the amended MOU, which is expected to be presented to Cabinet soon. He noted that although he is no longer in charge of the Police Ministry, he is dedicated to ensuring continuity and improvement in these critical initiatives.
In conclusion, despite the current challenges, there is a constructive path forward for Fiji’s police service, supported by international collaboration and clear objectives for reform. This situation serves as an opportunity to enhance accountability and effectiveness within the force, paving the way for a stronger approach to law enforcement in the future.
Overall, while Minister Tikoduadua faces a difficult situation, his focus on constructive engagement and the urgency of his plans present a positive outlook for Fiji’s policing strategies moving ahead.
