Fijian Defence Minister Pio Tikoduadua has reassured the public that Fijian soldiers serving in the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) are not impacted by the recent increases in tensions within the Middle East. During a recent parliamentary session, Tikoduadua highlighted that currently, only one Fijian officer is deployed with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), in addition to personnel involved with the Fijian contingent in the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO).

The Minister emphasized the preparedness and safety of Fijian troops, stating they are strictly following Standard Operating Procedures while being backed by comprehensive contingency plans for possible evacuation scenarios. Communication lines remain open between the Ministry and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces headquarters, ensuring a coordinated approach to the safety of peacekeeping personnel deployed in the region.

Tikoduadua reiterated that the safety and well-being of these peacekeepers is a primary concern for the Coalition Government, with the Republic of Fiji Military Forces receiving daily reports to stay informed and ready to react to any emerging incidents. He noted that discussions are ongoing with countries such as the United Arab Emirates regarding the temporary deployment of Fijian troops and equipment to enhance operational readiness.

Looking ahead, a government delegation is scheduled to visit the Middle East early next year to evaluate the on-the-ground conditions, review reinforcement needs, and express appreciation for the support being provided to Fijian peacekeepers. Additionally, Tikoduadua mentioned the possibility of sending seven out of 14 Bushmaster vehicles to the UNDOF mission area, although the movement is currently restricted by regulations from both Syria and Israel regarding vehicle entry.

In a broader context, these efforts reflect Fiji’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability in conflict zones, showcasing the country’s proactive approach to international peacekeeping duties. With continuous evaluation and strategic collaborations, Fiji is not only ensuring the safety of its personnel but also reinforcing its role as a key player in global peacekeeping initiatives.
