Fiji’s Defense Future: Preparing for 2025 Budget and Beyond

The Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs in Fiji is in the process of identifying key areas where it requires support as it prepares for the upcoming 2025/2026 National Budget announcement. Minister Pio Tikoduadua highlighted the paramount importance of implementing the National Security Strategy (NSS) during recent planning discussions held within the ministry.

A primary focus for the ministry includes strengthening the Defence headquarters, which will provide policy guidance for future governance, as well as establishing the National Security and Defence Council, which is currently being legislated. To support this initiative, a legal consultant from Australia has been engaged to assist with the necessary groundwork.

Additionally, Tikoduadua emphasized the need for a comprehensive review to ensure veterans receive adequate care and support. He expressed optimism about consistent financial assistance and new business models for veterans being available in the future as part of the budget considerations.

The Minister also confirmed that the review of the RFMF Act is underway. This is a significant step as the government aims to ensure that military operations align with contemporary expectations and challenges. Tikoduadua stated that having legislation in place is vital for guiding the RFMF to meet current and future security needs in line with the NSS.

These discussions and initiatives echo themes from previous articles, particularly regarding the commitment to modernizing military capabilities and the ongoing National Security and Defence Review (NSDR). It reinforces the government’s holistic approach to ensuring Fiji is prepared to face modern threats, streamline operations, and enhance the overall efficacy of its defense forces. By prioritizing the well-being of veterans and modernizing legal frameworks, Fiji is working towards a more secure and stable future, fostering hope for citizens and enhancing national trust in governance.
