Fiji’s Data Dilemma: Unveiling the Adult Content Surge

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, revealed that in Fiji, 92 terabytes of data are consumed monthly for accessing pornographic and adult-related content. In his Ministerial Statement, Kamikamica highlighted that such content has established a significant presence in the digital landscape, accounting for a considerable share of network traffic.

Data collected over a three-month period indicated that around 626 terabytes were downloaded, positioning this traffic among the top ten most utilized data categories. Kamikamica noted that this amount of data consumption is roughly equivalent to the contents of 100 million books.

“The statistics provide clear evidence of the extensive nature of adult content and pornography, which occupy a significant portion of network traffic. The industry is evidently substantial,” he commented.

To address these concerns, the Cabinet has endorsed the formation of a National Taskforce aimed at tackling pornography and understanding its societal implications in Fiji. Kamikamica emphasized that the task force represents more than just a symbolic measure; it signifies the Coalition Government’s dedication to taking serious action.

He further explained that this initiative is a concrete step towards ensuring community safety and protecting the most vulnerable members of society. Additionally, Kamikamica mentioned that the government is preparing a Cabinet paper to support Fiji’s involvement in the WeProtect Global Alliance, a global initiative focused on combating online child sexual exploitation.
