The Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH) Hospital in Nadi has officially launched its Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) chamber, a notable advancement in treatment options available for chronic conditions such as wounds, burns, decompression sickness, and diabetic foot ulcers. The unveiling ceremony was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Biman Prasad, who touted the launch as a significant milestone in the fight against non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Fiji, particularly diabetes.
Professor Prasad highlighted the critical health statistics concerning diabetes in Fiji, pointing out that the disease leads to one amputation every 12 hours. He emphasized that the introduction of HBOT is set to dramatically improve health outcomes and significantly diminish the frequency of amputations, stating, “The launch of HBOT is a major step forward in improving health outcomes and reducing the need for amputations.”
This state-of-the-art HBOT chamber will operate 24/7, aiming to accelerate recovery for patients suffering from diabetes-related complications. Moreover, the new facility is designed not only for the local population but also aims to attract patients from other Pacific Island nations, establishing Fiji as a regional healthcare leader.
In addition to the HBOT service, the launch event also featured the introduction of the Sugar Cane Growers Fund (SCGF) Loyalty Program, which provides healthcare discounts to active cane farmers, reinforcing the government’s ongoing commitment to enhancing healthcare accessibility for rural communities.
Overall, the inauguration of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy at PSH signifies a promising advancement in healthcare provision, enhancing the treatment landscape in Fiji. This initiative not only addresses current healthcare challenges but also fosters hope for a healthier future as the nation invests in advanced medical technologies and improves overall quality of life for its residents and neighboring communities. Fiji’s proactive approach could set new standards in healthcare delivery, encouraging partnerships and boosting medical tourism, which ultimately benefits both local and regional patients.
