Fiji’s Cost of Living Crisis: Will Price Controls Be Extended?

Savenaca Narube, the leader of the Unity Fiji party, is urging the Government to reevaluate the list of goods under price control and consider a temporary extension. He believes this approach would enable both the Government and businesses to better manage the rising prices and distribute the economic burden more fairly.

After almost two years in office, Narube expressed concerns that the Government’s strategy in the 2024/2025 national budget primarily emphasizes increasing incomes, such as raising minimum wages and providing educational and welfare allowances. He pointed out that the Coalition Government’s efforts are failing to address the surging cost of living that continues to impact families throughout Fiji.

“The escalating prices of various goods and services defy economic rationale,” Narube remarked, accusing sellers of exploiting the situation to maximize profits. He emphasized that Unity Fiji has consistently advocated for a dual approach to tackle the rising costs, noting that the entire burden is currently placed on the citizens.

Furthermore, Narube proposed that the Government adjust customs taxes, shifting the emphasis from essential goods to luxury items, all without affecting overall revenue. He also recommended a review of Fiji’s exchange rate policy to enhance the stability of the Fijian dollar.
