The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has referred its Commissioner, Barbara Malimali, to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for further examination. The referral relates to a complaint about alleged Abuse of Office during Malimali’s time as Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.

In addition, FICAC announced that it has closed five cases previously referred by the Supervisor of Elections earlier this year. The closure of these cases was confirmed on July 24, 2024. The cases involve various allegations, including:

1. Alleged corrupt practices linked to the FijiFirst Party, specifically against the Fiji First Australia Association Incorporated, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, and Tito Bainimarama.
2. A complaint against Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and Mohammed Saneem regarding collusion and conflict of interest, alongside Ariff Ali for making a $10,000 donation to the FijiFirst Party while serving as a civil servant.
3. Complaints addressing His Excellency, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, and Charan Jeath Singh.
4. A complaint against Voreqe Bainimarama for inaccurately declaring his Income, Assets, and Liabilities for the years 2014 to 2019 and 2022.
5. A complaint concerning Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum for not disclosing an overseas travel allowance.

FICAC indicated that other matters referred by the Supervisor of Elections are currently under investigation, and the Commission will refrain from commenting until these investigations are complete. FICAC emphasized that it continues to function normally, with all its processes and procedures remaining unchanged, and is committed to addressing every complaint thoroughly, irrespective of who is involved.
