Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that he will soon submit a letter to the President seeking approval for a Commission of Inquiry regarding the appointment of Barbara Malimali as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).

Mr. Rabuka previously indicated that determining the scope and specific mandate of the Commission of Inquiry is within his authority. Malimali’s appointment, made on September 4, has sparked controversy as she is currently under investigation by the agency she now leads.

“We are just waiting for the President to respond, and I will ensure he signs the approval,” Mr. Rabuka stated. “I have already recommended my letter, which will be presented to him upon his return.”

The agenda includes examining the issues surrounding FICAC, specifically:

– The appointment of FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali
– Allegations of ministerial interference
– The scapegoating of charges against ministers
