Fiji’s Corrections Services Introduces 81 New Job Positions!

The Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) recently completed a Job Evaluation Exercise (JEE), revealing the establishment of 81 new positions across administration, technical roles, and ranking officers. This initiative, approved by the Cabinet and endorsed by Parliament through the current fiscal year’s budget, aims to modernize and realign the organization’s structure.

Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga addressed Parliament, clarifying that traditional notions of promotions and demotions will no longer apply within the FCS. He noted that an officer’s movement through the ranks will depend on the position they are assigned to, taking into consideration their performance and the operational needs of the organization.

The JEE not only aims to introduce new roles but also seeks to update Human Resources policies, ensuring that pay structures are realigned according to experience, qualifications, and job demands. The last evaluation of this kind occurred approximately 40 years ago, marking a significant shift in how the corrections service operates.

Mr. Turaga emphasized the importance of the JEE in formalizing job descriptions for various roles within the agency and highlighted that a new organizational chart has been created to showcase these new positions, a task not completed in previous administrations.

This exercise represents a significant step forward for the Fiji Corrections Services, indicating a commitment to improving organizational effectiveness and ensuring that roles and responsibilities are clearly defined.
