The Fiji Corrections Service has introduced a new policy aimed at enhancing standards of personal conduct and integrity among its personnel. The Personal Conduct and Marital Integrity Policy highlights the necessity of maintaining professional and ethical behavior, emphasizing the obligation of all staff to act in ways that positively represent the service.
This policy outlines specific guidelines regarding conduct in marital and committed relationships, particularly targeting behaviors like extramarital affairs that could tarnish the service’s reputation. It also sets expectations for professional conduct both within and outside the workplace, as officers are expected to uphold a high level of public trust.
Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, the Commissioner of Corrections, noted that the policy demonstrates the Fiji Corrections Service’s dedication to professionalism, integrity, and maintaining public confidence. He stressed that personal integrity is not solely a personal issue for staff, as it significantly influences the public’s perception of the service.
Dr. Nakarawa stated, “Maintaining integrity in personal relationships is not just a private matter for FCS staff. It directly impacts how the service is perceived by the public. This policy sends a clear message that we expect our officers to be role models of ethical behavior and to maintain high standards both in their personal lives and professional duties.”
The newly proposed policy will apply to all employees of the Fiji Corrections Service. It also includes support systems, such as counseling services, for those dealing with personal difficulties. Once implemented, any violations of the policy could lead to disciplinary measures that range from counseling and reprimands to suspension or dismissal, depending on the severity of the infraction.
The policy is currently under review and will undergo consultations before its official rollout.
