The Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) is cautioning the public against participating in illegal activities that involve smuggling contraband into correctional facilities. This warning comes in light of a recent uptick in arrests connected to individuals attempting to deliver prohibited items to inmates, including a case involving a woman with young children.

Over the past two days, FCS officers, in cooperation with local police, apprehended two individuals in separate incidents. They were caught trying to smuggle items such as marijuana, methamphetamine, and mobile phones inside the correctional institutions. Both individuals were immediately detained and turned over to law enforcement.

Corrections Commissioner Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa emphasized the FCS’s unwavering stance on maintaining a strict zero-tolerance policy regarding contraband smuggling. He highlighted the severity of engaging in these activities, noting that the legal repercussions often outweigh any short-term gains one might see.

Dr. Nakarawa urged the community to remain vigilant and to refuse any requests from inmates or third parties to transport prohibited items. He stressed the importance of reporting such incidents to safeguard oneself from legal involvement.

Particularly concerning is the case of the young woman, whose husband is currently incarcerated, that was apprehended while attempting to smuggle contraband. Dr. Nakarawa pointed out the potential for tragic consequences, stating that having both parents involved in illegal activities could lead to dire socio-economic impacts on their innocent children.

This proactive message from the FCS holds the potential to strengthen community awareness and deter individuals from engaging in illegal activities, contributing to a safer environment for all. By fostering vigilance and accountability, the community can help support positive change and ensure that families remain intact and nurtured, rather than displaced by criminal actions.
