Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad has emphasized that the delegation representing Fiji at COP29 is exceptionally well-prepared. As the head of this team, Prof Prasad highlighted their proactive approach, which included engaging in pre-COP briefings with both delegates and ministers to align their goals.

He noted that the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) operates within a structured framework focused on negotiations and specific issues. Rather than solely concentrating on securing financial aid, the delegation aims to influence critical agreements related to funding mechanisms, such as the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG), during the COP29 discussions.

Prof Prasad expressed that the processes at COP29 are vital for determining the funding available through the Loss and Damage Fund and other financial channels, particularly benefiting Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like Fiji. The delegation’s participation is crucial in advocating for special needs and provisions that will ease access to funding for these nations.

Additionally, he affirmed that Fiji’s discussions will not be limited to its own needs but will encompass the broader interests of Pacific SIDS, forming part of a collaborative effort within the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) group to drive negotiations that impact financial availability for all member countries.

In summary, Fiji’s delegation is gearing up to play an influential role at COP29, focusing on shaping the financial landscape for small island nations facing unique challenges due to climate change. This collaborative approach signifies a commitment to advocate not just for Fiji, but for the entire Pacific region, underscoring the importance of unity among small island states in the battle against climate adversity.

The positive outlook is that with such thorough preparation and a clear strategy, Fiji is poised to be a significant voice in the international climate dialogue, which could lead to better funding opportunities and support for vulnerable island nations.
