Fiji’s delegation to COP29 is set to tackle a significant agenda, with a total of 94 items on their list, dismissing claims of a nominal involvement in the international conference. Deputy Prime Minister and head delegate, Professor Biman Prasad, clarified that the current delegation of 56 members is not the largest in Fiji’s history, highlighting that 75 delegates represented the country when Fiji held the COP presidency in 2017.
In a recent briefing prior to their departure, Prof Prasad addressed and criticized an opinion piece by Savenaca Narube, the leader of Unity Fiji, who made several claims regarding the details of the delegation. Prof Prasad described the assertions as “misleading and factually incorrect.” Narube had inaccurately suggested that the current delegation was the largest ever, anticipated costs of $6 million for the trip, and mischaracterized Dr. Sivendra Michael as a new negotiator.
The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that funding for the delegation was primarily external, with 91.07 percent of costs covered from outside sources, amounting to about $960,065, while the Government contributed approximately $238,739.77, bringing the total travel expenses to about $1.2 million. The delegation also includes members from the opposition and various ministries.
Clarifying details regarding Dr. Michael, Prof Prasad noted he has served as a COP negotiator since 2015 and emphasized the experience of the delegation in climate negotiations. He highlighted that public finances were strategically utilized to ensure a strong engagement of ministers in critical climate conversations.
In summary, Fiji’s delegation is committed to a serious and well-prepared approach at COP29, working diligently to address climate change issues. Their extensive area of covered agenda items reflects their proactive stance. This dedication holds the promise of making meaningful progress on vital global climate discussions, underscoring the importance of informed and factual dialogue in politics.
This article serves as a reminder of the significance of accurate information in political discourse and highlights Fiji’s dedication to addressing climate change on an international stage positively.
