Fiji’s Controversial Reconciliation: Speight’s Release Sparks Debate

Mosese Bulitavu, a member of the G9 crossbench coalition, has publicly acknowledged the recent release of George Speight, the leader of the 2000 civilian coup. Bulitavu is the first MP from G9 to respond to Speight’s release, which followed a decision on Thursday granting him Presidential immunity after the Mercy Commission reviewed his application.

“He has served his time! We need to move away from our past and through reconciliation seek restoration,” stated Mr. Bulitavu. He emphasized that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces is at the forefront of the reconciliation process, indicating that Speight’s release represents a significant step forward.

Mr. Bulitavu highlighted that only a handful of politicians who have experienced incarceration can truly understand the importance of granting a fully rehabilitated prisoner a second chance. He also pointed out the need for those outside prison walls to address societal perceptions of former offenders, advocating for their acceptance back into society after completing rehabilitation programs through the Fiji Corrections Service.
