Fiji’s Controversial Push for Reconciliation: Speight’s Release Sparks Debate

Mosese Bulitavu, a Member of Parliament from the G9 group, has expressed his support for the recent release of coup leader George Speight, who was granted Presidential immunity. Bulitavu is the first G9 MP to comment on Speight’s freedom, which followed a review by the Mercy Commission.

Bulitavu stated, “He (Speight) has served his time! We need to move beyond our past and seek restoration through reconciliation.” He highlighted that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces is spearheading the reconciliation process, and Speight’s release marks a significant step forward.

He further remarked that only a few politicians who have experienced incarceration can truly grasp why a rehabilitated prisoner merits a second chance. Bulitavu emphasized the importance of changing societal views on those who have committed crimes, urging acceptance of individuals who have undergone rehabilitation through the Fiji Corrections Service.
