Joel Abraham has stepped down from his position as the chief executive officer of the Fijian Competition & Consumer Commission (FCCC). Bringing his expertise to FCCC since 2013, Mr. Abraham has significantly influenced the organization, assuming the CEO role in 2016.
In a statement, the commission recognized Mr. Abraham as a transformative leader who has been committed to fostering a regulatory environment that emphasizes fairness, consumer rights, and economic integrity both in Fiji and the broader Asia-Pacific region. Under his leadership, FCCC has undertaken extensive measures to shield consumers from unfair and unethical business practices, establishing a robust framework for competition and consumer protection.
The FCCC noted that Mr. Abraham’s tenure was marked by substantial organizational growth and effectiveness, earning recognition as a reliable competition authority on both a national and international scale. Notably, Mr. Abraham played a crucial role in the formation of the Pacific Islands Network of Competition, Consumer Protection, and Economic Regulators (PINCCER), which has bolstered regional collaborations and elevated regulatory standards across the Pacific.
Additionally, he championed employee-focused initiatives, including the iCARE program and sustainable working conditions, setting the groundwork for a modern and well-resourced regulatory body. His leadership has led to multiple accolades for the FCCC, such as the Fiji Business Excellence Awards and the National Green Sustainability Award, elevating the organization’s profile within the region.
Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica praised Mr. Abraham’s commitment, stating that consumers are better protected now due to his leadership. He commended Mr. Abraham for his impact on regulatory standards and collaborations across the Pacific, further emphasizing that the creation of PINCCER has laid the groundwork for enhanced consumer protection and sustainable economic practices.
Commission Chair Isikeli Tikoduadua echoed this sentiment, describing Mr. Abraham’s influence on fair competition and consumer protection as transformative for the FCCC. He expressed confidence that Mr. Abraham’s legacy will continue to benefit Fijian consumers in the years ahead.
Looking ahead, Mr. Abraham has indicated his intention to pursue a regional role.
