Fiji’s Constitutional Crossroads: Reform or Reaffirmation?

Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has refrained from commenting on the recent government proposal aimed at amending the powers vested in the Attorney General under the Constitution. This comes in the wake of the government’s push to introduce the Constitution Amendment Bill 2025, which seeks to address concerns over an alleged over-concentration of power within the Attorney General’s office.

When questioned, Seruiratu remarked that during his prior tenure in government, there was no motive to challenge the powers rendered to the Attorney General, reflecting on his collaborative role in the administration. He noted, “We were part of the government; any concerns should have been expressed by the Opposition, but they weren’t raised at that time.” Consequently, he feels he does not have further comments to add on the current discussions surrounding the amendments.

This situation coincides with previous remarks from the current Attorney General, Graham Leung, who stated that reforming the Constitution’s provisions governing such powers is crucial for redistributing authority within the governmental framework.
