Fiji’s Constitution Under Scrutiny: A Call for Thoughtful Change

Unity Fiji party leader Savenaca Narube emphasized that any review of the 2013 Constitution should not be conducted for “political gamesmanship.” He stressed the importance of approaching this crucial national issue with the right intentions to benefit Fiji’s multiracial society.

Narube pointed out that Unity Fiji is actively pursuing legal avenues to challenge the 2013 Constitution. He stated, “We want to build national consensus. We aim to engage in extensive consultations, including discussions with the military, and to develop a credible transition plan.”

He highlighted the necessity of gaining support from all communities to ensure the adoption of the best Constitution for Fiji, reiterating, “In summary, we must do this right.”

According to Narube, a recent lecture by Professor Anthony Regan provided a comprehensive evaluation of the possibilities for amending or discarding the current Constitution. He reminded that Unity Fiji pledged during the 2022 election campaign to contest the 2013 Constitution, fulfilling this promise to the people even while not holding a position in Parliament.
