Minister Lynda Tabuya, who oversees Women, Children, and Social Protection, has called on the public to stay alert regarding the effects of new technological advancements and enhanced internet connectivity in Fiji. This statement follows a significant partnership between Vodafone Fiji and Starlink aimed at boosting telecommunications infrastructure, particularly for rural and maritime areas.

Despite the positive potential for improved connectivity, Ms. Tabuya expressed concern over a potential rise in the consumption of adult content. She highlighted alarming statistics indicating that Fiji ranks fourth globally on Google Trends for searches related to pornography, with adult content sites among the top ten in data traffic usage.

In her role as co-chair of the anti-pornography taskforce, Ms. Tabuya urged telecommunication companies and community stakeholders to proactively engage in awareness initiatives that educate citizens on responsible internet use. These sessions are crucial for addressing the risks associated with excessive screen time and exposure to pornography.

Moreover, she emphasized the necessity of equipping the community with knowledge and resources to navigate the digital world safely, pointing out the risks of technology-facilitated gender-based violence and violence against children. As Fiji advances its digital landscape, it is essential to implement protective measures to ensure the well-being of families and communities.

Ms. Tabuya advocated for a collective effort to foster a culture of awareness and responsibility, which would enable the population to harness technology for the collective good.

In summary, while the partnership between Vodafone and Starlink offers significant benefits for connectivity, the emphasis placed on responsible internet use and community education reflects a proactive approach towards safeguarding societal values in an increasingly digital world. The call to action serves as a reminder that technological progress should go hand in hand with protection and education to ensure that advancements contribute positively to the community.
