The Fijian Ministry of Agriculture is prioritizing the revitalization of its cocoa and coffee industries as part of a broader initiative to enhance agro-processing. Minister Vatimi Rayalu highlights the importance of transitioning from primary production to processing to bolster agricultural output. He believes this shift is crucial to avoid the pitfalls of the past and is encouraging local agro-processors and potential investors to contribute to this goal.
One key development is the initiation of a 300-acre cocoa planting project in Nasautoka, Wainibuka, which aims to kickstart the local market and production processes. Minister Rayalu noted that while there are existing markets for cocoa and coffee, current production levels do not meet demand. The northern regions of Fiji, including Cakaudrove and Taveuni for coffee, and Bua for cocoa and tea, are being targeted for these production expansions.
Reflecting on the cocoa industry’s historical success that once contributed approximately $22 million annually, Rayalu emphasizes the need to learn from past approaches to regenerate the sector. Efforts to enhance farmer collaborations and expand local production are already underway, aiming to establish a strong foundation for the industry’s future, primarily serving local markets before considering export opportunities.
Given the ongoing global supply shortages in cocoa production which have driven prices up significantly, there is a bright outlook for Fiji’s cocoa industry.
