Fiji’s Coalition Government: Empowering Citizens and Tackling Local Issues

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad stated that citizens now feel more liberated and are encouraged to communicate openly with the government and its officials. This discussion took place during his visit to farmers and residents in Viria, Muaniweni, Ilahabad, Urcalia, and Vatoa Street, where he was accompanied by members of the Ministry of Finance, the Fiji Police Force, and other relevant ministries.

“I believe we have alleviated the fear among the people. They feel much more free now,” he remarked.

The local farmers and residents expressed gratitude for the government’s ongoing support, which includes new initiatives like the back-to-school assistance program. They took the opportunity to voice concerns regarding issues such as access to clean drinking water, the condition of rural roads and drainage systems, road safety, farm theft, stray animals, agricultural extension services, medical services and facilities, illicit drug problems, and other challenges facing their communities.

Professor Prasad mentioned that the Ministry of Agriculture has been allocated a significant budget to support not only sugarcane farmers but also other agricultural sectors. “Subsidies for herbicides and pesticides are now available,” he added.

He assured the community of the Coalition Government’s commitment to promptly address their concerns, acknowledging that Fiji is grappling with a severe drug issue, resulting in more arrests. “We need to safeguard our schools, children, villages, and settlements,” he emphasized.

The Minister noted that efforts are underway to strengthen the Police Force. He also highlighted that significant improvements are being made within the health services, despite challenges, as many health centers across the country are in dire need of repair.

“The Coalition Government will continue to hold meetings like this regularly and is dedicated to an inclusive approach that involves all community members in decision-making and addressing critical issues related to community and national development.”
