Fiji’s Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, participated in the 13th Assembly and Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) Week held in Seoul this week. During the event, he met with GGGI Director General Frank Rijsberman to highlight the organization’s support for Fiji.
Minister Tuisawau engaged in two high-level ministerial panels where he addressed the challenges faced by Pacific Small Island Developing States, which include the effects of climate change, inequality, and the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic. He stressed the critical need for climate finance and innovative funding solutions to enhance infrastructure and community projects in Fiji.
In his remarks, he pointed out Fiji’s susceptibility to climate change and advocated for inclusive climate finance strategies to ensure no one is left behind. The Minister also underscored the significance of renewable energy in rural electrification and acknowledged the role of development partners in these efforts.
Reiterating Fiji’s commitment to collaborate with GGGI, Minister Tuisawau urged for the organization’s sustained involvement in the South Pacific region. He further emphasized that the upcoming COP29 would be vital in obtaining a Loss and Damage Fund to support vulnerable nations like Fiji.
