The Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, participated in the 13th Assembly and Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) Week held in Seoul this week. During the event, he met bilaterally with GGGI Director General Frank Rijsberman, expressing gratitude for the organization’s technical support to Fiji.
Minister Tuisawau engaged in two high-level ministerial panels that addressed the challenges faced by Pacific Small Island Developing States in relation to climate change, inequality, and the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic.
He underscored the critical role of climate finance and the pressing need for innovative funding mechanisms to bolster Fiji’s infrastructure and community projects. In his speech, he pointed out Fiji’s susceptibility to climate change and urged for inclusive climate finance initiatives to ensure that no one is neglected.
Additionally, the Minister emphasized the significance of renewable energy in enhancing rural electrification, commending the efforts of development partners. He reaffirmed Fiji’s dedication to collaborating with GGGI, advocating for the organization’s ongoing involvement in the South Pacific.
Minister Tuisawau also highlighted the importance of COP29, noting it as a pivotal opportunity for securing a Loss and Damage Fund to assist vulnerable nations such as Fiji.
