The Frank Hilton Organisation has noted a significant rise in the number of children in need of support, with cases increasing by 25 percent each year. Chief Executive Officer Sureni Perera highlights that many cases are more frequently identified during special awareness months which promote early intervention and support.
Dedicated to assisting children with disabilities and developmental challenges in Fiji, the organization has observed an encouraging trend: More children aged two and under are now seeking services earlier than in previous years. Historically, many children would only come to the organization for help at ages 10, 13, or even 18, but this new proactive approach indicates growing awareness about early detection and intervention.
Perera expressed gratitude for the government’s allocation of $900,000 to the Frank Hilton Foundation this year, though she emphasized that further resources are essential to keep pace with the increasing demand. She noted that while the government is doing its best, competing priorities can make it challenging to allocate more funding.
Moreover, Perera also called for broader changes beyond just financial support, focusing on the need to enhance policies, raise awareness about the concept of inclusion, and shift mindsets toward a more inclusive society.
The Frank Hilton Organisation remains committed to advocating for more awareness and resources to better support children with disabilities in Fiji, fostering a hopeful outlook for the future as society begins to recognize the importance of early intervention.
In summary, the current landscape shows a positive shift towards earlier identification of needs among children with disabilities, which can significantly improve their outcomes and quality of life with the right support and resources.
