Fiji’s Children at Risk: The Urgent Call for Change

Spread the love

Recent statistics reveal a troubling reality in Fiji, where around 72 percent of children have faced various forms of violence, including physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. This alarming situation presents a stark contrast to the safe environments that homes, schools, and communities should ideally provide.

Sashi Kiran, the Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, addressed this concerning statistic in light of a recent video circulating on social media that depicted violence against young children. She emphasized the urgent need for enhanced education and awareness programs focused on positive parenting practices, particularly targeting younger parents who may lack support from extended family.

Kiran announced that her Ministry is actively working on launching initiatives aimed at educating the public about good parenting methods and defining what constitutes violence against children, along with prevention strategies. She asserted, “Every child in Fiji has the right to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment, free from fear or harm.”

To combat child violence more effectively, the Ministry is enhancing its reporting mechanisms, encouraging the public to utilize the 24/7 child helpline (1325) to report abuse. Kiran assured that confidentiality is upheld and that prompt actions will be taken to safeguard victims and bring offenders to justice.

Furthermore, the Minister highlighted the expansion of counseling services, the establishment of safe shelters, and partnerships with non-governmental organizations to provide rehabilitation for child victims and their families. She urged the community to act responsibly in sharing sensitive content online, recommending that individuals report incidents to the appropriate authorities instead of circulating distressing videos that could further traumatize victims.

Kiran called for a united front from families, community leaders, educators, and all citizens to work alongside the Ministry in creating a safer environment for children. She concluded with a hopeful message, encouraging everyone to cherish and protect Fiji’s children, stating, “Together, we can break the cycle of violence and build a society where every child is protected, valued, and cherished.”

This important initiative highlights the collective effort needed to safeguard the well-being of the younger generation in Fiji, fostering a future filled with hope and safety for all children.
