Fiji is facing a critical situation regarding child welfare, with alarming statistics indicating that 68 percent of reported child abuse cases in 2023 involve neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse. Opposition MP Penioni Ravunawa, who also serves as the Shadow Minister for Health and is a church leader, expressed his deep concern over these troubling figures during a statement to FijiLive.
According to the Child Welfare Act National Database, there were 1,477 cases reported this year, with a striking 73 percent of the abusers being known to the victims—half of whom are immediate family members. Ravunawa has called for immediate action to address this societal issue, emphasizing the urgent need for communities to become more vocal against such injustices.
“We can no longer remain passive observers of this horrifying reality. It is crucial that we raise awareness now more than ever. The Ministry of Women and Children is encouraging a broader advocacy for children’s rights and urging everyone to focus on child protection,” he stated.
As Fiji observes World Children’s Day, Ravunawa urged citizens to commit to making every day a reminder of the importance of protecting children, highlighting that the safety of future generations is a collective responsibility.
In light of these grave statistics, the call to action from Ravunawa serves as a hopeful reminder that change is possible. By creating awareness and fostering community involvement, there is potential for positive change in the lives of Fijian children as well as hopes for a safer future.
