Fiji’s Chiefs Push for VKB Reform Amidst Community Tensions

Traditional leaders in Fiji are advocating for stricter protocols in the registration process for the Vola Ni Kawa Bula (VKB), the official record of iTaukei lineage. Great Council of Chiefs chairman, Ratu Viliame Seruvakula, expressed concerns that recent reforms have compromised community oversight in this vital process.

Seruvakula highlighted that, in the past, parental registration of children into the VKB required the approval of the mataqali leader. However, changes in legislation now allow for broader access, where individuals can register names without communal validation. He warned that such changes risk the integrity of lineage records, stating, “The structure has changed, and now it’s creating more division than unity.”

His remarks underscored a growing tension within communities where maternal relatives (vasu) now often outnumber traditional landowners, leading to disputes over land decisions. This concern resonates with previous discussions within the Great Council of Chiefs about issues stemming from this demographic shift, particularly around the need for improved frameworks addressing land rights and governance.

Similar sentiments were echoed by the iTaukei Affairs Minister, Ifereimi Vasu, who also noted the challenges posed by discrepancies between official records and clan histories. The ongoing dialogues showcase a commitment among traditional leaders to navigate the complexities of modern dynamics within the iTaukei community, aiming to restore unity and respect for traditional governance structures.

As these discussions evolve, they reflect a hopeful vision for the future of iTaukei governance, emphasizing the importance of cultural preservation and the role of communal engagement in decision-making processes. By addressing these challenges collaboratively, there is potential for fostering stronger community ties and promoting equitable development opportunities for all Fijians.
