Fiji’s Chicken Prices: Stable or Misleading?

The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has confirmed that the prices of whole bird chickens have remained stable over the past year, countering recent claims circulating on social media that suggested otherwise. In its latest statement, the commission urged consumers to stay informed as it continues to keep a close watch on market operations to ensure they are genuine and fair.

The FCCC has implemented a strict weekly monitoring process to ensure that chicken prices align with authentic market conditions and are not subject to unethical practices, such as price gouging. This initiative was established in response to significant price increases by some retailers following the recent VAT adjustments made in the 2023-2024 Fijian National Budget.

According to the FCCC’s ongoing assessments, chicken prices have remained relatively consistent, thanks to its continuous monitoring efforts and collaboration with suppliers and retailers, which have collectively contributed to maintaining affordability for consumers. The commission noted that much of the sale of whole bird chickens comes from regular supermarket promotions, which better reflect current customer preferences rather than the regular price listings.

However, consumers are advised that not all sizes of chicken on special may be available at every outlet, prompting the need for pre-purchase checks to avoid any disappointment. The FCCC encourages the public to be informed shoppers by comparing prices, reviewing promotions prior to shopping trips, and taking advantage of the frequent specials available. This active consumer behavior is essential in fostering a competitive market climate that helps avert unreasonable price hikes.

In summary, while there may be confusion regarding chicken prices, the FCCC assures consumers that prices have remained stable and encourages active engagement in the marketplace. This not only benefits individual consumers but also boosts the overall health of the economy, allowing Fijians to enjoy fair prices for essential goods amid changing economic conditions.
