Fiji’s care-giving sector is poised for significant development, as highlighted by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), Manoa Kamikamica, during the re-launch of the Prestige Skills Training Academy. This local institution, which offers care-giving courses, aims to empower Fijians to participate in this expanding field.

Dr. Swartika Nair, the academy’s director, noted that the training programs are designed to enhance community members’ essential care-giving skills. Kamikamica pointed out that care-giving resonates with Fijian cultural values of respect and care for the elderly and vulnerable, stating that Fijians possess innate abilities in this area. With adequate support, care-giving could evolve into a significant independent industry in Fiji.

“We need to diversify the Fijian economy, and we believe that the retirement care-giving sector holds great potential,” said Kamikamica. Dr. Nair also mentioned that the academy’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) courses, accredited by the Fiji Higher Education Commission, offer national qualifications to graduates, enhancing their professional recognition.

Many alumni have already joined the care-giving workforce, and new programs focused on mental health care and manual handling skills have been introduced. These specialized courses are expected to address various community needs, further improving Fiji’s care-giving sector. The re-launch of the Prestige Skills Training Academy could benefit both domestic and international care-giving markets.
