The Fiji Cancer Society has reported the registration of approximately 772 new patients over a span of 18 months from January 2023 to June 2024. During the launch of the Pinktober awareness month at Albert Park in Suva, programs officer Shweta Kapoor highlighted that cancer remains the third leading cause of death in Fiji.
Kapoor clarified that these new figures do not account for patients already receiving support from the Fiji Cancer Society (FCS). She emphasized the significant role of lifestyle factors, such as poor diet, alcohol use, physical inactivity, and smoking, in contributing to cancer risk, alongside genetic predispositions.
She further encouraged the public to implement simple positive changes in their lives, such as engaging in regular exercise, following a healthy diet, and maintaining a healthy weight to reduce their cancer risk.
Over the course of their advocacy program, the FCS has provided assistance to more than 7,528 individuals, reflecting the support from local sponsors and the public. The organization has allocated $144,000 towards patient support, which includes essential services like transportation, diagnostic testing, chemotherapy medications not covered by government programs, CT scans, and weekend oncology operations.
In total, the society has expended an impressive $317,851, with approximately $44,919 spent on taxi transfers in Labasa alone. Kapoor indicated that the FCS arranged nearly 5,000 transfers, which included options like boat rides, flights, ambulance services, and home visits by doctors, ensuring that patients are not isolated regardless of their location.
The team has traveled over 171,500 kilometers throughout Fiji, reaching patients in all areas and providing necessary care. Kapoor noted that the services offered are crucial for those battling cancer. Each kilometer traveled, dollar spent, and breath made easier through their support exemplifies the collective impact of the community’s contributions.
She described these contributions as more than just donations; they represent opportunities for life, precious time, and hope for families. This support enables families to maintain hope, allows parents to witness their children growing up, and gives loved ones valuable extra time together.
