The government has no intentions of setting up a cancer treatment hospital in Fiji. Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, the Minister for Health and Medical Services, made this announcement in Parliament on Thursday, explaining that major hospitals already incorporate most treatment options.

He noted that as part of a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with Aspen, a plan is in place for the Lautoka and Ba hospitals to establish a radiotherapy center. Dr. Lalabalavu emphasized that setting up such a facility is a significant financial undertaking.

He outlined that while efforts are being made to introduce radiotherapy services in Fiji, there are ongoing reviews of the Radiation Health Act of 2009. The ministry is collaborating with Lautoka Hospital and the International Energy Agency on a project for the radiotherapy center at Lautoka Hospital.

Additionally, a multisectoral team is currently assessing the Radiation Health Act to facilitate the introduction of radiotherapy services, which is deemed essential for aligning the country’s legislation with international standards. Dr. Lalabalavu assured that this work is actively in progress.
