Muniappa Gounder, the general secretary of the Fiji Teachers Union, is urging school managements to implement spot checks as part of a broader effort to combat illicit drug use among students. He stressed the need for increased vigilance and called on parents to actively monitor what their children bring to school.
His comments came in response to an incident last week in which primary school students were referred to police for allegedly smoking marijuana. Gounder emphasized that parents should be diligent in checking their children’s belongings before they head to school.
“Regular spot checks are necessary to ensure that all items and individuals on school premises are scrutinized,” Gounder stated. This proactive approach, he believes, would help identify restricted items and cultivate an understanding among students regarding the consequences of drug possession.
He expressed concern over the rising number of drug-related incidents, remarking, “There are numerous cases, yet no significant actions are being taken. Spot checks are essential in this ongoing battle.” Gounder also called for greater cooperation from local law enforcement to promote awareness in schools.
“Law enforcement should proactively patrol schools and educate students about the risks associated with drug use,” he added. “Drug awareness should not be confined to a single week; it needs to be a continuous effort.”
Highlighting the critical role of education, Gounder underscored the necessity for schools and communities to prioritize informing children about the harmful effects of drugs.
