Fiji’s President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has expressed that the ‘Summit of the Future’ presents an excellent opportunity for Fiji and the global community to reinforce their commitment to safeguarding humanity’s future.
During the Plenary Meeting of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, President Katonivere emphasized that the pact formed during this summit signifies a collective pledge to improve together, ensuring that no one is left behind.
Under the theme “Summit of the Future; Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow,” he pointed out the critical challenges facing the world today.
He noted that ongoing conflicts, the escalating climate crisis, hindered development, failing ecosystems, and widespread inequalities and injustices are pressing issues.
“The most vulnerable populations are bearing the brunt of these challenges. If we do not act, future generations, including our children and their children, will suffer the consequences of our inaction. We share a vision for a sustainable future, and achieving this vision hinges on the actions we take now. We have just six years left until 2030 to advance the Sustainable Development Agenda.”
The President urged global leaders to collaborate effectively as member states, supported by a multilateral framework that also considers non-state actors, the private sector, and all segments of society.
“We must prioritize peace over conflict and uphold all human rights as outlined in the UN Charter. It is essential to respect and protect our environment and its resources, whether on land, at sea, or in the air,” he stated.
