Fiji’s Call to Action: Protecting Kids from the Dark Side of Begging

Spread the love

The Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection has reminded the public that it is illegal to force or encourage children to engage in begging under Fijian law. This important message underscores the numerous risks associated with child begging, which can lead to exploitation, abuse, and harm, depriving children of a secure and nurturing environment.

Minister Sashi Kiran emphasized the legal obligations of parents and guardians to ensure the safety and welfare of their children, noting that encouraging or coercing children to beg violates their rights and contradicts national laws meant to protect minors. She made it clear that those who facilitate such unlawful practices will face legal repercussions.

In a collaborative effort with law enforcement, the ministry is committed to prosecuting offenders to protect the wellbeing of children. The public is encouraged to report any instances of child begging to authorities by contacting the Child Helpline at 1325.

Minister Kiran also called for the community to join efforts in creating a more compassionate society where every child can enjoy a safe and joyous holiday season. As the year begins, she urged stakeholders and communities to unite in the mission of making Fiji a safer place for families and children, wishing everyone a New Year filled with kindness and goodwill.

This initiative plays a vital role in promoting child protection and fostering a culture of responsibility within communities. By working together, society can ensure a brighter and safer future for its youngest members.
