Fiji’s Call to Action: A Collective Pact for Humanity’s Future

Fiji’s President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has highlighted the ‘Summit of the Future’ as a vital opportunity for both Fiji and the global community to enhance their commitment to ensuring a sustainable future for humanity. During his address at the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, he noted that the pact established during this summit signifies a collective dedication to improving conditions for everyone and ensuring no one is left behind.

Under the theme “Summit of the Future; Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow,” President Katonivere expressed concern about the state of the world, mentioning ongoing conflicts, the intensifying climate crisis, the deterioration of ecosystems, and the prevalence of inequality and injustice. He emphasized that those most affected by these crises are the vulnerable populations, warning that future generations will bear the brunt of inaction taken today.

“We share a common vision for a sustainable future. Achieving this vision hinges on the actions we take now, with only six years left until the 2030 deadline for the Sustainable Development Agenda,” he stated.

The President called on global leaders to collaborate as member states within a multilateral framework that includes the participation of non-state actors, the private sector, and all sectors of society. He urged a collective commitment to choosing peace over conflict and to respecting human rights as outlined in the UN Charter, along with a strong emphasis on safeguarding the environment and its resources across land, sea, and air.
