Fiji’s Call for Unity: Embracing Diversity to Combat Racial Discrimination

The Attorney-General of Fiji, Graham Leung, addressed attendees at a function marking the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination in Nausori, emphasizing the need for unity and the rejection of racial discrimination within the nation. He asserted that no individual should feel like a stranger in their own land and called for an end to the practice of “othering,” where distinctions between different communities can lead to exclusion and unfair treatment.

Leung shared that while Fiji has faced challenges in its past, particularly with respect to racial tensions, the country must not allow divisions to perpetuate suffering as seen in conflicts worldwide. Drawing from Fiji’s history, he emphasized the importance of seeing each other as equals, regardless of background, and how this recognition fosters a sense of belonging and connection.

“It is essential that we celebrate our diversity, as it is one of our greatest strengths,” Leung stated, inviting citizens to embrace one another as Fijians first and foremost. He urged attendees to reflect on their shared experiences and connections, especially when away from home, highlighting that despite different backgrounds, the desire for unity remains strong.

Similar sentiments were echoed in previous discussions by other leaders, including Pio Tikoduadua, the Minister for Home Affairs, who reinforced the collective identity of all citizens as “Fijians” in recent workshops aimed at enhancing social cohesion.
