Fiji is being urged to make a declaration under Article 14 of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD). This recommendation was presented by Heike Alefsen, the Regional Representative of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights for the Pacific, during a panel discussion in Fiji commemorating the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
During her remarks, Alefsen reflected on the historical significance of the day, noting how the 1960 Sharpeville Massacre had catalyzed the global movement against racial discrimination. She underscored the role of this convention in promoting civil rights and emphasized the necessity of continued advocacy for its adoption and implementation worldwide.
Alefsen highlighted that while 182 countries, including Fiji, have ratified the ICERD, seven independent Pacific nations have yet to commit to it. She called on these nations to enact this vital framework to help combat persistent racism globally.
Echoing calls for greater unity and inclusivity, Fiji’s Attorney-General Graham Leung has previously spoken about the importance of moving away from racial divisions and fostering an environment where all individuals can feel they belong. He emphasized the need to value diversity as a core strength of the nation, aligning with Alefsen’s urging for individual complaints to be addressed as part of a broader strategy to combat racial discrimination.
Similar sentiments are shared by other leaders, including Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua, who advocate for seeing all citizens as “Fijians” first, promoting a united identity that transcends ethnic differences. This ongoing dialogue signals a hopeful future, centered on collaboration and understanding, as Fiji works toward nurturing a more inclusive society where everyone is valued and respected.
