Fiji’s Call for Positive Parenting: A Revolution Against Violence

Spread the love

According to Mohenesh Singh, the Counsellor and Founder of the Healing Hands Foundation, children in Fiji benefit from a constitution that prioritizes their rights, dignity, and equality. He emphasizes that safeguarding children from violence, exploitation, and abuse is not only an ethical commitment but also a legal requirement outlined in the Child Protection Policy and the Social Welfare Act 2010.

In response to a distressing social media video showing a father violently reprimanding his children during a lesson on numbers, Mr. Singh expressed his alarm, stating that such actions are completely unacceptable. He firmly believes that any form of violence against children should be met with zero tolerance under the law.

Mr. Singh pointed out that every child learns at their own pace and should not be coerced into learning. He lamented the ongoing prevalence of a mindset where violence is deemed a valid means of control, noting the unfortunate belief that causing harm can effectively instill discipline.

To combat these issues, Mr. Singh highlighted the need for a nurturing learning atmosphere, where children feel engaged, secure, and supported. He urged the government to enhance awareness of positive parenting techniques, especially for newer parents. Drawing a parallel to the training required to obtain a driving license, he proposed that young couples should partake in family life training and positive parenting programs to better equip themselves for parenting challenges.

Mr. Singh noted that while it may be straightforward to bring a child into the world, providing the necessary love and care demands significant effort and compassion. He called for an end to harmful treatment of children. He also advocated for child-friendly educational methods that incorporate songs, playful activities, and creative techniques to improve learning experiences.

The Healing Hands Foundation remains dedicated to endorsing government initiatives that foster positive parenting and child counseling. Mr. Singh concluded by emphasizing the importance of creating environments conducive to developing critical thinking skills, which can only flourish within safe, supportive, and child-friendly spaces.

This message offers a hopeful perspective on initiatives aimed at nurturing children in Fiji and highlights the essential role of positive parenting in fostering a generation of healthy, well-adjusted individuals.
