The Fiji Human Rights and Anti Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has announced that it has received three allegations of police violence in recent days, as stated by Commission Chairman Pravesh Sharma.
The first report comes from a man in Nausori, who claims to have been physically assaulted. The second case involves another individual who alleges that he was held in police custody in the Northern division for two weeks while experiencing physical abuse. The third incident refers to an alleged use of force during a caution interview, aimed at coercing a confession.
Mr. Sharma emphasizes the need for an urgent and unbiased investigation into these allegations. “Perpetrators must be held accountable,” he asserted, highlighting that accountability is essential for restoring public trust in the justice system and preventing similar incidents from happening in the future.
This call for transparency and accountability reflects a significant step toward addressing concerns about police conduct, which is critical in fostering a safer and more equitable society. The commission’s response could mark a turning point in enhancing the relationship between law enforcement and the communities they serve, ultimately leading to greater protection for citizens’ rights.
This situation serves as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding human rights and ensuring that those in positions of authority act with integrity and respect.
