Fiji’s President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has emphasized that the ‘Summit of the Future’ serves as a crucial platform for Fiji and the global community to enhance their commitment to securing the future of humanity.
While addressing the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly during the Summit of the Future Plenary Meeting, Ratu Wiliame referred to the newly adopted pact of the future, which embodies a collective pledge to work collaboratively, ensuring that no one is left behind.
Under the theme “Summit of the Future; Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow,” President Katonivere expressed his concerns about the current state of the world, highlighting ongoing conflicts, a worsening climate crisis, failing ecosystems, and pervasive inequalities and injustices.
He stated, “It is the most vulnerable who are experiencing the harshest impacts. Tomorrow, it will be our children and future generations who will bear the consequences of our inaction.” He called for a unified vision for a sustainable future, stressing that achieving this goal relies on the efforts taken in the coming years, particularly with only six years remaining until 2030 to advance the Sustainable Development Agenda.
The President urged global leaders to collaborate as member states within a multilateral framework that considers non-state actors, the private sector, and all societal members. He concluded with a call for prioritizing peace over conflict and upholding all human rights as outlined in the UN Charter, while also advocating for the protection of the environment and its resources.
