Children in Fiji enjoy protections under a constitution that emphasizes their rights, equality, and dignity, according to Mohenesh Singh, the Counsellor and Founder of the Healing Hands Foundation. He highlights the legal responsibilities set forth in the Child Protection Policy and the Social Welfare Act of 2010 to shield children from violence, exploitation, and abuse.
In response to a disturbing social media video depicting a father using violence while attempting to teach his children, Mr. Singh expressed that such actions are not only shocking but utterly unacceptable. He stressed that any form of abuse toward children is treated with zero tolerance under the law.
Mr. Singh stated, “We cannot force children to learn. Every child develops at their own pace and learns according to their individual abilities.” He lamented the ongoing cultural acceptance of violence as a means to exert control, stating it is disheartening that some believe causing harm is a viable solution. He emphasized that children thrive in a nurturing and supportive educational environment.
He called on the government to enhance public understanding of positive parenting skills, especially for younger parents. Drawing an analogy, Mr. Singh pointed out that just as individuals take tests to become better drivers, young couples should engage in family life training and positive parenting programs.
Recognizing that parenting demands significant patience and commitment, he urged parents to avoid inflicting harm on their children. Mr. Singh suggested employing child-friendly teaching methods like singing number songs, sand writing, and games to create more engaging learning experiences.
