Recent criticism has arisen regarding the Fijian government’s expansion of its Cabinet, following the appointment of new ministers and assistant ministers. Nilesh Lal, Executive Director of Dialogue Fiji, has termed the situation a “bloated” Cabinet, citing that the proportion of Members of Parliament now serving as ministers is unprecedented given the size of Fiji’s population and the pressing economic challenges faced by its citizens.

Lal pointed out that Fijians are enduring harsh austerity measures, including a significant 66% increase in the VAT rate, while the government opts to increase its executive ranks. He argued that a more sensible size for Fiji’s Cabinet would fall within the range of 12 to 15 ministers, suggesting that the rationale behind such an enlargement remains unclear. The roles and effectiveness of newly appointed assistant ministers, in particular, are questioned, leading to doubts about how these positions will contribute meaningfully to governance.
