A proposal is currently being considered for Fiji to host the Super Round of the Super Rugby Pacific, an event where a weekend of matches is held at a single venue. This intention was announced by Mark Evans, the chief executive officer of the Fijian Drua, during the National Sporting Organisations Conference at the Harbour Point Convention Centre in Suvavou.
Evans indicated a desire to rename the event to “Bula Round” rather than the traditional Super Round, suggesting that hosting all five matches in one location would create a lively and engaging atmosphere in Fiji. He noted that the idea of hosting multiple rugby games at one venue is not new, as it has been successfully implemented in rugby league in England for over two decades.
In support of this initiative, Evans highlighted that attracting such an event would require financial backing from the government, similar to the investments made by cities like Melbourne and Brisbane when they hosted the Super Round previously. He emphasized the need for adequate accommodation for teams, staff, broadcasters, and officials, estimating that the event would necessitate about 650 to 700 people, which brings a significant opportunity for sports tourism.
However, Evans raised concerns regarding hotel availability, stating that there are currently insufficient rooms in Suva to accommodate potential visitors, which is vital for the success of the Bula Round concept. He expressed hope for holding the event in February, a time when hotel occupancy rates are typically lower.
This proposal aligns with ongoing discussions about enhancing Fiji’s sports infrastructure and capacity to host significant international events, as seen in the optimism surrounding potential bids for events like the HSBC Sevens Series. The support from various stakeholders, including Tourism Fiji and Fiji Airways, showcases a collective ambition to leverage sports for economic growth through tourism.
The Bula Round proposal, if realized, could not only provide a significant boost to Fiji’s sporting profile but also invigorate the local tourism industry, reflecting Fiji’s rich rugby culture and the passion of its fans.
